Omega 3 Fatty Acids are an essential nutrient. Why essential? Essential in “essential nutrient” means that our bodies need this but cannot produce it. Omega 3 Fatty Acids support your immune system, aid in anti-inflammation in the body, support heart health, and lowers blood pressure. [Source]
There are three types of Omega 3 Fatty Acids:
ALA (alpha linolenic acid) which comes mostly from plant sources such as flax oil, flax seed, natural soy products, walnuts and canola oil. Not consuming enough of these? A supplement you can take is flax seed oil.
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) – these are found mostly in marine sources, specifically in fatty fish (3 oz) such as salmon, trout, herring, sardines and anchovies. An alternative option for vegetarians and vegans is algae. A supplement for DHA and EPA is fish oil or algae oil. [Source]
**It is always best to check with your healthcare provider regarding any new supplements as some supplements can interrupt any medications you are taking.**
When purchasing supplements, consider these factors:
Due to over-fishing and ocean contaminants, some people may want to consider Algae Oil over Fish Oil.
If choosing a fish oil, you can purchase a fish oil that is sustainably sourced. Recommended brands include: Nordic Natural products which are certified by Friend of the Sea, an organization that ensures seafood is sourced from sustainable fisheries and aquaculture. Carlson Labs The Very Finest Fish Oil is an option for those preferring an oil to a supplement capsule. Although this company also offers a capsule option.
