Meditation is a useful tool for relaxation, focus, calmness, coping with illness and pain, and overall well-being. Research on meditation indicates positive effects on the brain. Studies also show that meditation can help reduce blood pressure, reduce pain and help with certain psychological disorders.
The benefits from meditation are many: Developing new skills to handle stress, increased awareness, greater focus, more positive disposition, ability to be more present in the current moment, improved personal relationships and much more.
Yes, these are all great benefits but is meditation a good option for everyone?
You are a unique individual. As individuals, each of us has different life experiences that we bring into a meditation practice. These life experiences may impact our experience in meditation differently.
Individuals with physical limitations might be limited in certain movement meditations. If during a meditation a strong emotion or memory surfaces, consider what is best for you in that moment. Some options to consider is to 1) recognize the feeling you are having, 2) write down the facts of what occurred, and 3) consult your doctor or therapist. While rare, some have reported worsened emotional symptoms.
While meditation is very helpful in relieving depression or preventing depression, meditation can bring about different feelings for each individual. Working with a therapist who is trained in meditation could be beneficial. There are many types of meditation, which we will cover in the coming weeks. A quiet, solo meditation focusing on the breath might be isolating for some. In that case, consider other types of meditation such as guided meditations (a meditation led by a teacher), gratitude meditations, metta or loving-kindness meditation, or the general practice of mindfulness.
You know yourself best. If you are unsure about meditation, consult a doctor, therapist or a meditation teacher to inquire about whether this is an option for you to try.
Each Monday we offer a live, guided meditation group class for free. It is a great way to try meditation or jumpstart your practice. Sign up here!
