Mindfulness, being present in the moment and paying attention to what is going on around you and inside you. Water comes first to mind as a wonderful mindful practice experience.
If you are near an ocean or a creek, you can listen to the sounds of the water moving. Also depending on where you are, moving water can bring about a different temperature. If in a pool or bathtub, it is easy to close your eyes and take in the feeling of water around you. Also noticing how the smell of water will change from a soapy, bubbly bath to the sea salt smell from the ocean. Or observing the change in the tide. Sometimes the sight of water causes us to pause and take in the view. In sum, the presence of water can be a gift for practicing mindfulness.
Beyond the external senses, turning inward and examining how we feel in the presence of water. If it is a waterfall, we may feel the beauty. A peaceful lake might bring a sense of tranquility. A roaring ocean or white water river rapid may ignite a feeling of excitement and rush.
Consider setting out for a mindful practice this week. Choose a nearby river or lake. Or if homebound, take some mindful moments in the bath or shower – noticing the size of the droplets from the shower head or paying closer attention to the scent or non-scent of your bath soap. Or another option – something we are all doing a lot of lately – hand washing. Next time you are washing your hands take a few moments (or breaths) to observe the water flowing through your hands, how it feels, making note of the temperature, the suds, the movement of water on and around our skin. Do we feel any different about having to wash our hands for the 10th time if we pay attention to our breath while doing it? Maybe not or maybe so.
Water can be a fun way to practice mindfulness on your own, with a partner or with a child. Enjoy the practice….and don’t forget to notice your breath! Enjoy!
